Widening the Lens on TA – Cost Optimization vs Cost Management
August 6, 2025 by Nicole Greene
Cost-efficient, streamlined, flexible, digital, integrated, end-to-end, future-forward―these are some terms widely used when describing desirable operational outcomes for asset managers. And, while perhaps ubiquitous, they are indeed desirable. Yet too often, the efficiency objective morphs into a bottom-line exercise of driving down fees. This results in a near-term gain, but at the expense of future benefit. It will reduce the amount you pay―at least upfront―but when costs aren’t looked at through the lens of optimization, asset managers could end up robbing themselves of the outcome they need. Building your operational model only around cost savings is a path to the bottom.
Fees alone aren’t the right comparison. As the saying goes, “you get what you pay for.” But equally important, you don’t get what you don’t pay for. Cost myopia becomes a risk. A focus on ROI is what turns operations from a cost center to a strategic advantage and a transformative engine that drives growth.
At ý, we know the importance of building on efficiency and cost-effectiveness, and delivering agility, responsiveness and a competitive edge. Delivering optimization requires us to make smart, strategic investments in technology, capabilities and expertise―and ensuring that those investments are delivering measurable value. Aspects such as widespread use and integration of robotics or digital workers and AI can not only deliver lower costs, reduce risks and drive productivity, but also help us uncover new use cases and ways to adapt and do business. And that flexibility and relevance can boost your ability to expand and grow, which means you generate a return on what you spend.
Consider what that means and where it might be evidenced. For example, as the traditional silos between funds and wealth begin to converge, the same holds true for their traditional servicing roles and associated delivery channels. Your investors look for a holistic view of their financial picture. Why wouldn’t you think the same way? Imagine a fully integrated wealth and funds middle- and back-office platform that uses a single technology stack. Consider the advantages of an integrated fund accounting and NAV production service that connects the pricing function with your full-service register capability. What if that could also include access to a modern, powerful portfolio management and trade order management technology? Or provision of a full contact center across the main and sub-register models that services intermediaries, advisers and individual retail investors 24/7? It is possible. Rich and complete data sets and a total view of your activity and the ability to target your product development, in-house support teams and marketing resources in a way that optimizes what you spend. All of this is supported by a range of technologies that span the front, middle and back offices, freeing you from building and/or maintaining your own technology and services.
Would you pay a bit more for all that considering what you gain? If you would, then you are thinking about optimizing your operations with a focus on ROI and the future.
